I love Autumn. The leaves on the trees change colour thus creating a beautiful scene everywhere I walk, chunky knits and chunky boots become my style staples, food gets richer and more comforting and all my favorite TV shows launch into a new season. I have an unhealthy obsession for American TV shows. Anyone who follows me on Twitter can attest to this. I was overjoyed when favorites NCIS, New Girl, Supernatural, TVD, The Mentalist, The Good Wife and Sons of Anarchy returned and I’m greatly looking forward to the return of White Collar next week. American shows hold a special place in my heart. British TV just doesn’t compare. The production, direction and storylines just pull me in. I tend to gravitate towards old favorites but a few new ones are keeping me occupied at the moment.
I try not to get too attached to new shows as American network bosses are a fickle bunch and so many of my favorite shows have ended up being cancelled after just one season. But there a few new Fall shows that managed to reel me in. If you’re looking to sink your teeth into something new read on.
If you like…….The Vampire Diaries Try The Originals
The Originals is a spin off or The Vampire Diaries and I think I prefer it to TVD. I used to love TVD but the last season was a tad underwhelming. As the name would suggest it centres on the Mikaelson family aka the original vampires – Klaus, Elijah and Rebecca. Of course if you watch TVD you’ll know that the werewolf Hayley is preggers with Klaus’s offspring. The action has moved location this time and it is situated in New Orleans. The basic premise revolves around Klaus trying to regain control from his protege and former lover of Rebecca’s Marcel. Marcel has full control of the city though with even witches bending to his will.
It’s only 2 episodes in so far but early indications are that this is going to be a great show and a bit more dark than it’s parent show. Less romance more action.
Like The Following…. Try The Blacklist
I love James Spader he’s such a versatile actor and The Blacklist is very much a Spader vehicle, who can ever forget his role in Boston Legal. Confession – I was crushing on him hard in Boston Legal.
The Blacklist centres around Spader’s character Raymond Reddington. He is one of the FBI’s most wanted fugitives but one day he just walks into the FBI headquarters and hands himself over. He offers to help the FBI catch some of the world’s worst criminals but says he’ll only work with rookie FBI agent Elizabeth Keen. Why he has chosen this agent is a mystery but it is clear from the offset that they are linked somehow. Each week he helps Keen apprehend or take down a new fugitive with the help of contacts he has made in his 20 years of being a facilitator for the world’s worst criminals. We don’t yet know his motives though. He has compiled a list of what he deems to be the worst criminals and it is called The Blacklist.
Add to this the mystery surrounding Keen’s childhood and a husband who is clearly hiding something and you have an amazing show. Spader really does make this show, the actress who plays Keen lives in the shadow of Spader and her performance is a little lacklustre and frankly I find her annoying but Spader manages to make this show extremely watchable.
Like Charmed….Then watch the Witches of East end
Charmed fans will in all likelihood love this show. Instead of centreing around 3 sisters it centres around 2 sisters and their mother. The sisters are blissfully unaware of their witchy heritage as their mother has decided to keep it a secret after having lost her daughters to the craft – many times over. I should add in that their mother is over 100 years old and is cursed with endless motherhood. She has given birth to the sisters many times and each time they die she again falls pregnant with them. Confused yet?
But the sisters are just starting to discover their powers so here comes trouble. Add to this the fact that a shapeshifter is on the loose and looking to kill all 3 permenantly. Thrown in the fact that one sister is engaged but falling for her fiance’s brother and the other sister is in love with the local police detective. The pilot was action packed and I’m looking forward to seeing more of this show. Tbh I seem to love all supernatural themed shows so this one was bound to hook me in.
If you love…Crime Drama fused with the Supernatural Then Watch Sleepy Hollow
Sleepy Hollow has a great premise and is a retelling of the Washington Irving story but set in modern day America. To summarise Sleepy Hollow follows the story of Ichabod Krane who dies during the Revolutionary War and wakes up in a small town in Middle America. At the same time one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse is on the rampage in the small town.
The horseman beheads the town’ s sheriff and a young female cop called Abbie Mills starts investigating. Ichabod and Abbie team up to fight the horseman and other occult dangers in the small town. Ichabod has no knowledge of 21st century America so it makes for an interesting partnership. It is nothing like the film of the same name but it is an enjoyable watch. The partnership between the 18th century soldier and the 21st century cop is what makes the show. it does have an awesome ensemble cast though, not least the guy who plays Mills’s boss. You gotta love any show that features the four horsemen of the apocalypse.
So there you have my pick of the season’s new shows. Pretty much something for everyone here. are you as obsessed with American shows as me or are you more a Downton Abbey/Great British Bake off fan?
